Odonata.dk – A photographic journey into the amazing world of dragonflies and damselflies…

by hobby photographer Jesper Johnsen

I have been photographing as a hobby for several years now, and back in 2010 I bought myself a macro lens. With this I was suddenly able to get real close to especially insects.

Almost by chance I photographed some dragonflies and got really amazed by the looks and elegancy of these insects. Before I knew it I was hooked and started to actively seek for dragonflies and damselflies in nature, and even bought a couple of books about them.

I have created odonata.dk to share my interest in photographing dragonflies. The word Odonata comes from Latin and means “toothed”, and is the term used for the order of insects encompassing dragonflies (Anisoptera/Epiprocta) and damselflies (Zygoptera).

The purpose of odonata.dk is to present as many as possible of the odonata species of Denmark using photographs shot by me. The aim is also to provide some information about habitats, flying seasons, behavior etc. The short descriptions of each species are partly from the highly recommended book “Field Guide to the Dragonflies of Britain & Europe” by Klaas-Douwe B Dijkstra.

So enjoy your stay here, and feel free to contact me using the contact form. Especially if you spot any photos that have been placed under the wrong species. It is not always easy to determine the correct species using photographs alone.
