About

Danish common name: Sort Hedelibel.

The small, all-black males are a familiar sight on bogs and moors in our northern regions. Other black species are only seen south of its range. Younger males and females are easily distinguished by the black band marked with ‘golden drops’ on the thorax side.

Size

Total: 29-34 mm.
Abdomen: 18-26 mm.
Hindwing: 20-30 mm.

Habitat

Mostly acidic waters, such as bogs, moorland and heathy lakes, but also breeds in small tarns, drying ponds and ditches.

Flight Season

From mid-June to early November.

Range and Status

Common in Denmark.
