July 2026 Dragonfly Status

July is almost over, and it has been a very warm, dry, and sunny month. Unfortunately, I have not had as much time or motivation to go out photographing dragonflies as I would have liked.

Still, I have had a few trips, especially recently, visiting my local lakes for some good dragonfly photos which have been added to the gallery.

This year, Aeshna isoceles has been more abundant than last year, particularly in late June and early July. Now, at the end of July, it has almost disappeared. The same goes for Libellula quadrimaculata, only a few old and worn ones are left.

As always at this time of year, there are plenty of Aeshna grandis flying around, hunting insects and resting in the vegetation.

The darters, especially Sympetrum sanguineum, are also numerous, but I have not seen as many Aeshna cyanea as usual.
