Danish common name: Stor Hedelibel.
Probably the most widespread and numerous darter in our area. The archetypal Sympetrum with which all other species can be compared and that itself can be best identified by exclusion. It is most often confused with Sympetrum vulgatum.
Size
Total: 35-44 mm.
Abdomen: 20-30 mm.
Hindwing: 24-30 mm.
Habitat
Wide range of habitats, especially preferring warm, stagnant waters. These are often shallow and bare, this species being a pioneer of newly created ponds. Occasionally in flowing or brackish water.
Flight Season
From early June to November.
Range and Status
Common in Denmark.
